Current Tour - press bio

November 16, 2009

Buffy Sainte-Marie's career as an Academy Award winning singer songwriter has spanned genres, continents and generations. She emerged onto the music stage in the 1960s during what the music industry was calling the folk music era, but she was already writing diverse songs that would become international classics in the worlds of country, rock, rap, jazz and pop. Chet Atkins, Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Neko Case, Glenn Campbell, Courtney Love and Barbra Streisand, Joe Cocker and Camron all have covered her songs as have hundreds of other artists in 13 different languages.

This kind of diversity has brought both adoration and criticism. In a world where most people stick to only one category, fans who came to hear folk or country have been surprised to hear her huge hits from other charts. But time has brought changes to the music business and accessing and appreciating a wide diversity of styles is easier with internet marketplaces offering a quick listen. Now fans download exactly what they want and often buy individual songs from multiple categories. The music of Buffy Sainte-Marie has withstood the tests of both time and technology as songs, samples, covers and movie scores continue to be discovered by new fans, building upon her expanding song book year after year.

Her latest CD "Running for the Drum" just won a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) and in September she was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. November brought her two Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards.

Buffy Sainte-Marie’s current concert schedule is taking her to Europe, the United States and Canada, accompanied by a hot 5-piece all-Aboriginal band from Winnipeg.

The concert combines new songs from the "Running for the Drum" CD including No No Keshagesh and Cho Cho Fire, alongside those of her classics most requested by fans - Universal Soldier, Up Where We Belong, Until It's Time for You to Go, Spin & Spin, Cod’ine, Piney Wood Hills, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Starwalker and lots of others.
